Letā€™s start with a little tribute: 2 minutes of silence for those sophisticated cyber scammers who almost got meā€”but not quite! Hereā€™s my story, filled with drama, twists, and the moment I decided to play their game.

Chapter 1: The Call of Doom

It started with an automated call from an unknown number, claiming that all my mobile numbers would soon be blocked by the Telecommunication Department. Panic-inducing, right? The message asked me to press a number to connect with their agents to clarify the situation. Curiosity won, and I pressed ahead.

On the other side was a female agent, calm and professional. She informed me that a mobile number registered under my name, apparently in Mumbai, was being misused. The accusations? Sending illegal advertisements and harassment texts. What made her claims sound convincing was that she casually dropped information likeā€”myĀ FullĀ Name, the offending phone number, an FIR number, and even the name of the shop where this mystery mobile number was supposedly registered. She had everything!

Chapter 2: Entry of the Cyber Crime ā€˜Officerā€™

The plot thickened when she offered to transfer my call to a Mumbai Cyber Crime Department agent, who could clear up the situation and help me resolve the issue by issuing a "clarification letter" to the TRAI department. At this point, my curiosity had fully morphed into suspicion, but I still decided to go along. There entered a guy pretending to be rugged, no-nonsense government officer. With a rough tone, he grilled me with questionsā€”why had I called them, and what exactly was happening? I kept my answers cool and direct. Thatā€™s when he dropped the bombshell: over 70 complaints were registered against me for the misuse of that mobile number! Naturally, the solution involved me traveling to a Mumbai police station (non-convenient, right?) or requesting the "official documents" over WhatsApp. He insisted on having my WhatsApp number to send FIR copies, complaint files, and more. This is where I decided to have some fun.

Chapter 3: Time to Turn the Tables

I told him to email the documents instead of using WhatsApp, but he kept dodging the request, pushing for my WhatsApp number. Now, I was done playing nice. I stopped enjoying the charade and revealed my real identityā€”an experienced tech guy with a pretty good idea of what was going on. At this point, it was clear their next move was going to be some form of data theft or financial fraud. I quickly ended the call, but the experience made me reflect on how easy it is for regular folks to fall into these traps.

Chapter 4: Why This Matters

These scams arenā€™t random or amateurish. Theyā€™re well-planned, often run by organized cybercrime groups targeting people with a combination of social engineering and fear. While I found it amusing for a bit, I realized the dangers this type of scam could pose to others who might not be as cautious. The government is taking steps to combat these issues, but we need to stay vigilant. You can check if any unknown mobile numbers are registered under your name at the official government website: Official Govt Website

For Security Geeks: Letā€™s Hunt the Scammers!

Now, to my fellow security geeks, letā€™s turn the tables on these so-called "professionals." Iā€™m sharing all the info I gathered during this scam attempt:

  • Fake registered number: +916776413665
  • Shop address (claimed): 69 A, Door No. 4, Vijaynagar Colony, JD Nagar, Andheri East, Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Mobile number of the ā€œAndheri Cyber Crime Departmentā€: +918099170426
